075: eka uue maja konkursitöö hollandist

seen below is the purchase prize entry for the new building of the estonian academy of arts by the up and rising rotterdam practice board. founded in 2005 and run by bernd upmeyer, board has received much attention in recent international competitions, perhaps most famously with their project for beirut. upmeyer is also the man behind monu magazine (see the contents of the latest issue here) and the upcoming book e80 about binational urbanism.

järgnevalt ülevaade eka uue maja arhitektuurikonkursil ostupreemia vääriliseks valitud tööst märgusõnaga «publicsection». töö autoriks on hollandlane bernd upmeyer, arhitektuuribüroo board asutaja, muuseas ka ajakirja monu peatoimetaja ning peatselt ilmuva raamatu "e80" autor. viimase aja rahvusvahelistel konkurssidel korduvalt äramärgitud upmeyerit võiks pidada üheks hollandi arhitektuuri tulevikutegijaks. tema osalusel valmis ka võistlustöö eesti rahva muuseumi konkursile, kus ta küll edu ei saavutanud, kuid mida loodan siin kunagi samuti näidata.

jätan seletuskirja tõlkimata: saate aru küll, kes te aru tahate saada.

the sculpture park in front of the new eaa will be a part of the green belt of the old town of tallinn. | maja ette kavandatud skulptuuripark oleks saanud osaks vanalinna ümbritsevast grüünevööndist. veidi kahtlase väärtusega lootus, peaks mainima.

labeled «publicsection», here is the project's description:

the proposal for the new building of the estonian academy of arts is based on the visualization of the spatial program, as presented by the competition’s organizers.

volume scheme of the site | mahtude skeem

the visualization of the program was interpreted as a section of the building split in two parts by the public program. the public program contains all the auditoriums and galleries of the academy and cuts as an ascending public section in the shape of a huge staircase through the building thus dividing the faculties in the top from the parking underneath.

above and below: reorganisation of the given spatial program | ülal ja all: ettenähtud ruumiprogrammi ümbertöötamine

the public section also links the foyer and the ground-floor gallery with the café on the 2nd floor and can therefore be used as a gigantic exhibition space or café by itself. the public section is a monumental stairway for all kinds of cultural productions and activities. in order to create smaller entities and ensure the smooth functioning of the 9 auditoriums, the public section can be divided into smaller entities. this division can be achieved using several acoustic curtains. double curtains between the different auditorium areas create corridors and make sure that every auditorium is accessible independently at any time.

halls and workshops are spread around the whole of the building. all the halls and workshops are two-storey high and for the common use of all the faculties. they can be used flexibly for exhibitions, lectures, or meetings.

5 two-storey high halls and workshops | viis läbi kahe korruse ulatuvat ruumi

the stairs in the halls and the workshops connect the different faculties with each other and are also linked to the 2 large courtyards in the centre of the building and can thus unify all the faculties into one large continuous space. if necessary, the entire building can be transformed into one big gallery area. the connections between the courtyards, the halls and the workshop enable a cross-utilization of all spatial resources, which will provoke and ensure artistic and academic discourses throughout all the faculties.

žürii arvas projekti kohta nii:

võistlustöö autorid valisid lahenduse, kus lihtne, perfektse kuubi kujuline vorm on paigutatud sarnaselt võidutööga krundi kaguossa, võimaldades gonsiori ja laikmaa ristmikule kujundada avara linnapargi. züriiliikmetel oli hea meel tõdeda, et autorid ei piirdunud vaid tühjuse tekitamisega hoone ette vaid kavandasid sinna paviljonilaadseid ehitisi, mida on eka poolt võimalik aastaringselt kasutada, luues seeläbi vahetu kontakti üliõpilaste ja linlaste vahel. samas mõjub valitud maht geomeetrilisest korrapärast tingituna linnaruumis töntsakalt ja raskepäraselt.

the jury's thoughts:

the cubic shape of the building and its placement is similar to the danish architects' winning scheme. the jury was fond of board's idea to erect pavilion-like structures in front of the building to create active communication between the academy and the city. the 10-storey building was considered to be a bit too pudgy and heavy-looking in its urban situation. though visually quite similar, the winning project proposes a building 5 storeys taller and more slender, leaving more room for the park in front.

night view from laikmaa street | öine vaade kaupsi külje alt

teiseks tugevaks ideeks peeti hoonesisest läbi mitme korruse voolavat trepistikku, mida kasutatakse kogunemiskohana, vajadusel jaotatakse aga liikuvate vaheseinte abil auditooriumiteks, aulaks ja blackbox´iks. maketilt võib lugeda, et suhtlemaks välisruumiga on trepistik kogu perimeetril fassaadis rõhutatud. kuna fassaadikäsitlus on võistlustöös antud üldsõnaliselt, ei ole kahjuks arusaadav, milliseid arhitektuurseid võtteid kasutades selline efekt saavutatakse. huvitav on trepistiku visuaalne üleminek tänavaruumiks esimese korruse tasandil, kus tänav muutub ootamatult teatrilavaks. segadust tekitas vaid trepistiku tõusu suuna valik – loogilisemana tundunuks hooneesisele väljakule avanev ja piki gonsiori tänavat tõusev lahendus. kriitikat pälvis ka blackboxi paigutamine trepistikule – arvestades ruumikasutuse omapära, ei hakka selline lahendus tööle.

the multifunctional stairs was thought of as a strong idea, although the jury would have liked it to open to the park in front and not the side of the building. also, the placing of the blackbox was considered questionable.

kolmandaks leidis äramärkimist selge ja kompaktne kahe valguskaevuga põhiplaan, mis tagab eka vajadustele vastava paindlikkuse ruumide paigutamisel. selge konstruktiivne skeem ja lihtne vorm loovad eelduse, et hoone ehitusmaksumus kujuneks suhteliselt madalaks, samuti on eksperdi hinnangul võimalik hoone ehitada madala energiavajadusega hoonena.

the jury liked the open and adjustable floor plans with two lightwells, as well as the clear constructive scheme which would have made the construction of the building relatively cheap.

ebaõnnestunud on -1 korruse lahendus, kus õppetööks vajalikud ruumid on täielikult ilma loomuliku valguseta. autorid käsitlesid ka võimalust ehitada hoone kahes etapis, ent antud lahenduse puhul ei ole see otstarbekas – liiga suur on rajatavate ajutiste konstruktsioonide osakaal, äärmiselt keeruline on ehituse organiseerimisega seonduv.

the only real problem was the basement floor with no natural light for the classrooms. the jury also saw problems in the proposed scheme to erect the building in two stages.

kokkuvõtvalt – võistlustöö pakub huvitavaid ideid nii linna- kui siseruumi kujundamiseks, samas ühendades ruumiprogrammi paindlikkus konstruktiivse lihtsuse ja energiasäästlikkusega. puudu jääb siiski see eka-le loomuomane tabamatu „miski”…

in conclusion, the project offers interesting ideas to shape public and interior space, connecting all this with effectiveness, adjustability and low energy consumption. there's just this abstract „something” missing that is immanent to eaa... but overall the project was good enough to receive purchase prize and beat more than 90 contestants from all over the world.

the other purchase prize in the eaa competition was awarded to françois blanciak, see his work here. the winning scheme by danish offices sea and effekt will be realised by the end of 2011.

070: eka konkursil auhinnatud töö jaapanist

seen below is the competition entry by french-born but tokyo-based architect françois blanciak for a new building for the estonian academy of arts in tallinn. named «sashimi», blanciak's work received purchase prize and was applauded by the jury (which most notably included david zahle from big and roger riewe from riegler riewe) for its bold approach and ability to perfectly create an exciting building in the recommended envelope, which proved to be a great challenge for most participants. the stumbling block of «sashimi» was its quality of plans and sections. the competition was eventually won by danish offices effekt and sea for their joint entry «art_plaza». more info about the competition: here.

project description:

in order to maximize the use of natural light within the given site, the project proposes to organize the different components of the estonian academy of arts within a line that follows the boundaries of the buildable volume. the continuity of its flow is interrupted by a series of cuts (recalling sashimi, or the art of slicing raw fish), which at once distinguish clearly the various programmatic elements of the project, and allow the sunlight to reach the underground levels, where most workshops are located.

the linear organization of the building creates a wide interior street within the site, where large art exhibitions can be open to the public, and where generous lightshaft windows following the cuts of the overall shape can transmit light to the underground. the multiple cuts into the continuum of the academy also create a variety of accesses to the different schools.

the main entrance faces laikmaa street along the west side of the site, which also directly opens toward the inner exhibition courtyard, and leads to the welcoming functions of shop and cafeteria.

at the beginning of the project line is the faculty of fine arts, so that its roof terrace can be reserved for student work exhibition. then follows the general rooms, which form an arch in the eastern part of the site, in order for both northern and southern parts of the academy to be able to share its resources equally. this location for the general rooms also ensures that the first phase of construction of the academy contains the basic necessary common and administrative functions.

access to the underground car park is made possible by the curvy inclination of the general rooms part geometry, which also allows vehicles to access the neighboring yard of kivisilla street. along the doted circuit that is formed by the building, the second main entrance for the public is located at the north-east corner of the site, along gonsiori street, and gives direct access to the open academy. in addition, this entrance lobby contains an elevator core that includes the cargo elevator, which can directly connect the public to the top level that accomodates the assembly hall and the black box. a third main entrance is situated along this same façade, at the corner of gonsiori and laikmaa streets, and gives public access to the gallery, as well as student and faculty access to the faculty of design.

turning around the inner exhibition courtyard, the doted programmatic circuit ends with the two remaining faculties of architecture and art culture, which hover above the main entrance of the complex along laikmaa street, thus forming a sheltering canopy. the interstices created by the various cuts along the building are occupied by in-between spaces of inferior caliber than that of the programmatic elements, and provide the academy with a multitude of pocket gallery spaces for students to showcase their work.

the overall design of the academy is kept intentionally essentially mineral, with a skin made of double-layered partly transluscent glass and a courtyard free of trees, in order to answer the issue of sustainability not by saturating the design with greenery but by optimizing the penetration of natural light into the building complex.

kuivõrd sisukamateks postitusteks praegu aega pole, siis siin vaid 1 lakooniline youtube'i link. animatsioon kujutab endast kunstiakadeemia tulevase hoone anatoomiat. maja peaks minema ehitamisse 2010 alguses ning valmima 2011 lõpus. eks näis, kas tõesti.

001: eka uus hoone

render: worldarchitecturenews.

eka uue hoone konkursi võidutöö on esimene eestis asuv / eestisse planeeritud objekt, mida tutvustas mainekas [suurte] arhitektuuriuudiste sait worldarchitecturenews.com.

projekt on muide päris kuhjaga rahvusvahelist tähelepanu pälvind. näiteks paigutas saksa arhitektuuriajakiri wettbewerbe aktuell taanlaste töö lausa juunikuu numbri esikaanele.
